Autonomous and Electric Mobility for Smart Sustainable Cities
This study aims to enhance acceptance of autonomous vehicles (AVs) by improving human-machine interface (HMI) design for A-to-pedestrian interactions.
Through an online survey with 440 participants from Japan and Singapore, we evaluated five types of graphics on AV exteriors, finding pictograms as the most preferred, followed by graphics with eyes and pictograms, and graphics with eyes only.
Cultural differences were observed, with Japanese participants favoring graphics with eyes. Overall, participants expressed positive attitudes and emotions toward these graphics, emphasizing the importance of developing universal graphics to enhance public acceptance and interactions with AVs.
